We want to express our sincere gratitude to dr. Marck and dr. Sluimers, founders of the Back to Basics Flap Course, for sharing their knowledge and expertise throughout the years. The Back to Basics Flap Course was first organised by Klaas Marck en Jan E. Sluimers in 2015 in Urk. They successfully kept the course going for 5 years, after which they passed the baton to Matthijs Botman and Hay Winters. The content of this syllabus is essentially based on dr. Marck his work ‘Back to Basics - Tekstboek voor de lokale huidlap chirurgie’, the course syllabus for previous editions of the Back to Basics Flap Course. Unfortunately, dr. Marck passed away December 19th, 2021.
We are honoured to have been given the opportunity to continue their efforts regarding the education of local flap design, a craft so essential to the field of plastic surgery.

A sustainable and customizable training model
We collaborate with organizations, such as Interplast, Doctors of the World, Friendship, and CapaCare to move from the short-term surgical mission model to a more sustainable model focused on knowledge exchange. This saves money, human resources, and reduces the carbon footprint.
National surgical societies worldwide can embed the course in new and existing training programs and provide an effective and inexpensive element for Continuous Medical Education (the ATLS course is an example of this).
